Glade by Audio Imperia: a Free Cinematic Orchestra Built for Creativity

There are free sample libraries designed to give you a small taste of a larger product, and then there are instruments that make you wonder why they are free at all. Glade by Audio Imperia belongs firmly to the second category. Described as “The Unearthed Orchestra”, it is a complete cinematic writing instrument that combines orchestral foundations, world instruments, voices and organic percussion inside a remarkably immediate creative environment.

What makes Glade particularly interesting is that it does not approach orchestral sampling simply as a collection of individual instruments. The traditional orchestral material is certainly there, with high and low strings and ensemble woodwinds, but the palette quickly moves into much more distinctive territory. Duduk, fujara, shakuhachi, ney and pan pipes sit alongside two harps, kalimba, celesta, crotales, marimba and an extensive collection of organic percussion. There are even two boy soloists with legato and sustained articulations. The result is less a conventional orchestra and more a carefully selected collection of acoustic colors designed to be combined, transformed and played.

When the sound becomes the beginning of the composition
This is where Glade becomes particularly inspiring. Sometimes a composition begins with a melody, a harmonic progression or a rhythmic idea. But modern virtual instruments have increasingly introduced another possibility: sometimes the sound itself provides the first idea.

Load a texture, play a chord and something happens. A movement inside the sound suggests another chord. A breathy flute changes the emotional direction. A percussion layer introduces a pulse you had not planned. Suddenly you are no longer browsing sounds: you are writing music.

Glade has clearly been designed around this way of working.

At the center of the instrument is its Designer interface, where up to four different sources can be layered into a single playable sound. Strings can meet voices, woodwinds can interact with organic percussion, and traditional orchestral colors can be combined with instruments from very different musical cultures. Two macro controls can then reshape these layers in real time, turning a static chord into something that moves, develops and breathes.

For musicians who prefer to start playing rather than programming, Audio Imperia includes 84 Designer presets. But these are not simply finished sounds to scroll through. They can become starting points for creating completely new combinations, with individual controls for each layer including EQ, filters, envelopes and effects.

The Designer also includes creative processing specifically intended to move beyond conventional orchestral sounds. Aurora combines delay and reverb to create spacious ambient environments, Nomad introduces digital sample-rate manipulation and bit reduction, while Quiver creates modulation and movement. Glade can therefore travel surprisingly far from its acoustic origins, moving naturally into cinematic textures, ambient music and experimental sound design.

An orchestra that can still behave like an orchestra
The creative side of Glade does not replace traditional orchestral programming. Separate multisampled instrument patches are available when greater control is required, complete with articulations and keyswitches.

The strings include sustained, sordino/tasto blends and tremolo textures, while the orchestral woodwinds offer sustained, staccato and repeated-note articulations. The world winds receive considerably more detail than might be expected from a free library: instruments such as duduk, fujara, shakuhachi and pan pipes include expressive sustains, trills, bends, flutter techniques and other performance variations.

The percussion selection is equally interesting. Alongside taiko, talking drum, conga, tabla, claves and woodblocks are recordings of tree logs, branches, leafy branches, tree trunks and pine-cone shakers. These sounds reinforce the organic identity of Glade and give composers material that can work as traditional percussion or as ingredients for completely different rhythmic textures.

The recordings were created with Audio Imperia’s long-term recording partners at Budapest Scoring and Clockwork Sessions, and the library is designed to arrive mix-ready without demanding a complicated setup before you can start playing.

Glade and Glade Studio
Audio Imperia offers two versions. The standard Glade is deliberately compact at approximately 4.4 GB and includes the Classic and Modern mixes. Glade Studio expands the library to approximately 12.5 GB and provides access to four microphone positions — Spot, Decca, Outrigger and Far — for composers who want greater control over the spatial character of the recordings.

Importantly, this is not a distinction between a limited instrument and a complete one. The musical content and core features remain available in both versions; Studio is primarily about additional mixing flexibility.

And the standard version of Glade costs nothing.

Not a demo. Not a handful of patches extracted from another library. Glade is available for $0 and works with the free Kontakt Player 7.10.9 or later, with installation through Native Access 2. It is also NKS ready.

That makes Glade significant for another reason. High-quality cinematic and orchestral tools have traditionally required a substantial investment before a composer could even begin experimenting with them. Instruments like this continue to lower that barrier. But perhaps the most interesting thing about Glade is not that it is free.
